The waste that sits on the lake floor

Lake Ohrid is under pressure from unplanned urbanization, wastewater, and decades of accumulated debris. Glass, plastic, metal, and old fishing nets settle on the bottom between 5 and 30 meters deep — beyond the reach of standard cleanup actions carried out on land.

This underwater waste damages the ecosystem and water quality, and can only be removed by diving. That's where we step in.

Certified divers, devoted to the lake

All our members are trained divers. That means we have a unique ability to reach the zones other ecological initiatives can't access. The idea for our work came directly from what our divers see with their own eyes — every time they dive.

Ohrid is our home and our responsibility. From the surface you see a UNESCO-protected city, the fortress, and traditional houses; below the surface — a lake waiting for someone to listen.

A clean Lake Ohrid

When our work pays off, this is what we see below the surface — crystal-clear water, a sandy floor, and an undisturbed ecosystem that's a joy to dive in.

How we pursue our mission

A clean underwater floor

Organized diving cleanups at shoreline locations across the Municipality of Ohrid. With lift bags, boats, and surface support, we reach the zones that land-based actions can't cover.

Open knowledge base

The first local database documenting the type, quantity, and location of underwater waste. Everything recorded and mapped — publicly available to the community, institutions, and future research.

Circular reuse

Part of the recovered material gets a new life through educational exhibits on our beach. Whatever can't be reused — we recycle through our partners, so it never returns to nature.

An engaged community

Training for young divers and volunteers, digital campaigns, and educational content for the citizens and youth of Ohrid. Caring for the lake is a shared responsibility for all of us.

A clean lake is a shared interest

  • Residents of the Municipality of Ohrid
  • Visitors and tourists
  • Local institutions and schools
  • Young people who want to get involved
  • Future generations who inherit the lake
